Athletic Trainer

 

Division:  High School

Work Days:  225 (Full Time)

Reports To:  Athletic Director

Pay Scale:  plus index or stipend

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  

The primary responsibility of the Athletic Trainer is to administer the training room by practicing the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of injuries incurred through athletic participation with the use of physical modalities. Additionally, the position will be responsible for teaching first aid and CPR procedures to coaching staff.  The goal of the position is to have athletes as ready to participate as physically and safely as possible, and to prevent athletic injury from ever occurring. 

 

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Current NATA certification in good standing, eligible for State of Arkansas athletic training licensure
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor Certification
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public, and other employees of the organization. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Daily develop a plan of action and budget to address needs for the training rooms.
  2. Monitor weather conditions, and provide guidance on safe athletic/activity participation.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to perform the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment (including CPR/first aid), and rehabilitation as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification and the Arkansas State Board of Athletic Training.
  4. Order appropriate supplies/materials for the training room.
  5. Attend all senior high and junior high practices/games as designated by the athletic director.
  6. Provide written report of student injuries and status of injury to head coach, athletic director, and parents as appropriate. Maintain appropriate records and keep on file all physical forms.
  7. Provide treatment and rehabilitation as needed to junior and senior high athletes.
  8. Attend Arkansas Athletic Trainer Associates meetings and NATA National Meeting. On a yearly basis (or as required), provide CPR/first aid training to all coaches and training on CPR and heat-related illnesses.
  9. Provide and coordinate with parent’s information regarding insurance claims.
  10. Determine an athlete’s physical readiness to participate and communicate this with the coaching staff.
  11. Have knowledge of normal anatomical structure and function, physiological demand and response to exercise, normal biomechanical demands of exercise, nutritional and hydration demands of the athlete, contraindications and side effects of prescription and non-prescription medications, absorption, dissipation, and transmission of energy of varying materials (i.e. protective padding), and legal requirements and rules of the athletic event.
  12. Have knowledge of Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other transmitted diseases.
  13. Have knowledge of transmission and proper cleaning of athletic and non-athletic supplies and equipment.
  14. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.



Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk and stand.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, and depth perception.   The employee may frequently lift up to 25 lbs.

 

The noise level in the work environments is usually quiet to noisy. . 

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and  maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports, and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of administrators, teachers, coaches, parents, students, and/or employees of the district.  

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical information in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community.  Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies.
