Bus Driver
Division: Transportation Contract Length: 179 Days
Reports To: Director of Transportation Emp. Category: Classified

Summary: Position is responsible for operating a school bus and transporting students and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently over specified routes, to and from schools, and various other activities. Position conducts pre-trip inspections, observes safety regulations and policies, enforces student discipline on the bus, and performs related work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Checks bus vehicle before each operation to mechanical defects, fuel, and safety equipment; notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
- Keeps assigned bus/vehicle clean inside and out.
- Drives bus/vehicle on assigned route, taking on and dropping off passengers, as assigned; discharges passengers only at authorized stops; transports only authorized students and authorized personnel.
- Obeys all traffic laws, and observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
- Interacts with students, staff, and community members on a positive basis.
- Maintains discipline when students are on the bus; reports undisciplined students to the proper authority and fills out required forms.
- Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
- Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
- Maintains current route maps; notifies office staff of any changes.
- Maintains daily logs, students counts, and other data, as required.
- Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices, as needed.
- Conducts semi-annual bus evacuation, safety drills, and implements evacuations in an emergency situation to maintain passenger safety.
- Participates in all required training.
- Submits to drug screenings, when required.
- Maintains a CDL drivers license as required by the State Department of Transportation.
- Regulates bus internal temperature to provide for passenger comfort.
- Maintains and enforces seating charts, as instructed by transportation director.
- Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Must possess a valid commercial drivers license (CDL) with a passenger endorsement (P)
Must possess an excellent driving record
Must be able to successfully pass drug screening
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Duties are performed on a school bus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to loud noise levels, fumes or airborne particles, noxious odors, vibrations from the bus, and traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands and arms, climb, bend, stoop, and kneel, talk, and hear. The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures. The employee must be able to communicate orally, and hear on a two-way radio with transportation dispatch and emergency services while the bus is in motion. Employee must be able to communicate with co-workers, students, supervisors, and other adults. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
